First week

Summing up the first week -- sorry for the boring details! It's still difficult, but I'm making progress. Muscles still hurt, but different ones now, and maybe not so much -- except my back. That seems to be a constant. That's better than blisters though! Walking in socks or my Vibram 5-fingers.

Day one - I already wrote about - pedometer says 1959 steps, and maybe two miles total.

Day two - 2645 steps:, no aerobic steps:, mileage: 1.08

Day three - 5232 steps:, no aerobic steps:, mileage: 2.14

Day four - 3770 steps:, no aerobic steps:, mileage: 1.54

Day five - 6215 steps:, 3061 aerobic steps:, mileage: 2.55

Day six - 5350 steps:, 2130 aerobic steps:, mileage: 2.79

Day seven - 3062 steps:, no aerobic steps:, mileage: 1.25 (I was at the hospital with my dad most of the day, and came home exhausted.)

Oh, and weight: added two pounds! Doesn't seem right. 239.

The figures don't always make sense, and the trend isn't steadily upward, but I mean to keep with this no matter what. How long will it take to get to 20k steps daily, and forty to fifty miles per week? Say, 200 miles per month? By the end of next year, I hope to make this my "new normal."

I'm going to switch to dates rather "day #", and maybe make the next post take me to the new year, and do monthly posts then. We'll see.

Photo with Laptop

Day two.....Surfdesk!

Bleah. I'm tired, and my pedometer didn't work for the first couple of hours, so I only show 2650 steps. Maybe I walked two or three miles? Hard to say, and it was in little chunks, as I was constantly interrupted, or tired enough to stop.

On the upside, I got the Surfdesk from Amazon today, and it works well! When I'm up to it, it will work for me. No way to use a mouse, though.

Treadmill arrives!

I could hardly sleep anticipating the arrival of my treadmill! It arrived in an enormous box, and thank goodness the price I paid included setup and removal of all that packing material. It is enormous, but fortunately folds up and is relatively easy to move. Bob of course had to try it out while I was eating my breakfast and drinking my coffee. I didn't trust myself to do those things yet, even at one mile per hour. I can type though, at that speed, and when I'm sharp, up to 1.2 mph. YAY!

How can I do that, you say, with no desk yet? Fortunately I saw someone's creative use of a ironing board as a temporary desk on office-walkers.com, and it works well! I discovered I can read a book at about 2 mph, although it makes me dizzy to look up and around still. I don't know if that's lack of sleep, or the dizziness I felt last night every time I woke. I'm happy to say that it seems to be less tonight.

I'm TIRED, after not much sleep and walking maybe one and one half hours, or maybe more. I got my pedometer going again, after walking about 3/4 of a mile, and it has 1959 steps on it after that. Part of that was on the treadmill. I decided to get the pedo working again because I get interrupted so often while walking on the treadmill, which makes using the stats from it difficult to use. Someday in the future we'll have pedometers (or telephones) which communicate with the treadmill, and vice-versa, right?

I'm not gonna focus on aerobic steps yet. I would rather get up to 8 to 10 hours per day, at an average of one mile per hour or more, and when that gets too easy -- increase the incline. I did part of today at 2%, and it did make me puff a bit!

Oh, weighed myself today too. I'm starting this journey at 238 pounds, and today did about 1.5 hours, covering about 2 miles.

Wow, it's been awhile since I posted here. First I got bored of blogging about walking, and then I got bored of walking. Now I'm no longer satisfied to sit most of the time, and not be moving! A few months ago I came across an article about walking while working, and investigated that a bit. I mentioned it to Debs, who recommended Brain Rules, which I ordered from the library and read. The author, Dr. John Medina, discusses the research which indicates that since we evolved while walking, our brains and bodies work the best if we are moving most of the time. For more on that, see http://www.brainrules.net/.

So I've ordered a treadmill. I looked on Craigslist, but gosh there are a lot of them, and it seemed easier to just buy one new and have the guarantee in place. Plus, delivery and setup! I'm anxiously awaiting the email from Costco with a delivery day. Just can't wait! I ordered the XTerra TR6.55. Come quickly! Supposedly shipped by truck from Arkansas on the 5th.....
In the meantime, I've been investigating the desk part of the deal. Office-Walkers is the site where all the photos and research are, so I joined up. So far, what I like best is below:

By Karen Lopez, found here: http://officewalkers.ning.com/photo/designed-and-made-this-myself. I was thinking that could be clear too, if the Plexiglass wasn't too expensive.

So I'll be storing my thoughts here until I can actually get walking again. I hope to get up to 8 to 10 hours per day, at 1 or 2 miles per hour. That could be like 70 miles per week! Of course I'll have to work up to it again. Eventually, I'd like to add in some workouts with faster walking and even running, to get the heart and lungs involved too. Being in good enough shape to just run up to the library and back would be GREAT!
